On June 9, 2024 two groups camping in the same campground at Reykir - Grettislaug, Sauðárkrókur Iceland reported three separate boats on Black Beach. These folks did not know each other when they reported the boats. Yet, the following day they met each other in the campground.
While on vacation in Iceland, Anett and Beat Rohrer from Switzerland had a hike starting from Grettislaug Campsite along the sea in the northerly direction. After a few hundred meters they arrived to the black sand beach. There is a lot of driftwood and other things washed up there. They saw the first boat and about 50m further the second. Initially they did not know Jörg. They left the boats on the beach and continued our hike. The next morning they met Jörg, who found the boat #230396. He did the same hike as they did. He was approximately 30 minutes later. Jörg Heusmann and family came from Germany and were on on holiday in Iceland with their motorhome. They found the boat among driftwood while walking on a deserted beach.
Boat 230396 was left on the beach by the Rohrer's and found and reported three days later by Armin Hollerbach. This boat originated in Seattle, Washington in Eckstein Middle School where student Ava Mae Christoffersen decorated it. It was deployed at the North Pole by Le Commandant Charcot on August 2, 2023.
Ava Mae Christoffersen designed her small wooden boat in her science class in 2023. She was studying ocean currents as part of the Ocean Atmosphere and Climate unit as a 6th grader in Mr. Jeff Westmoreland’s class when all 6th graders participated in Float Your Boat. Her boat with decorated with flowers and a tropical theme because, according to Ava Mae, she loves the summer and the sun. The boat #230396 was deployed on the Charcot to the North Pole in the summer of 2023, and discovered in Iceland in June of 2024 along with another boat decorated by student Lillian Katerine in the Eckstein Middle School science program, #230144 from Ms. Jessica Levine’s class. It was deployed at the same tlme as #230396. Ava Mae was excited to discover that her boat traveled all the way over there. “I thought it might sink or something,” she said.
Boat 232476 was decorated in Boulder, Colorado at Centennial Middle School in Bill Schmoker's class by Yandel Becerra. It was deployed by Le Commandant Charcot on August 31, 2023.
