Just in case you are wondering where your 2022 boats are, here is an update.
Decorated wooden boats were loaded on the US Coast Guard Cutter Healy icebreaker in early July 2022 and are underway on the ship arriving at the North Pole approximately October 1, 2022. Boats from the following schools and organizations are on the Healy:
West Leyden High School, Illinois
Ipswich High School, Massachusetts
Eckstein Middle School, Aki Kurose Middle School, Pacific Science Center, and National Nordic Museum, Seattle, Washington
The following schools and organizations’ boats will be loaded on Le Commandant Charcot (passenger cruise ship) soon for a summer deployment. Once the boats are deployed this blog will be updated.
Pitkin County, Basalt Regional, and Garfield County Libraries, Colorado
University of Washington Aquatic Science Open House, Seattle Washington
Sandgerdisskóli, Grunnskóli Drangsness, Álftamýrarskóli, Icelandic schools
The Healy will be supporting USA scientists participating in the international science program Synoptic Arctic Survey and will be transiting through the Bering Strait into the Arctic Ocean approaching the North Pole from the West Arctic. You can find the position of the USCGC Healy on this page.
Le Commandant Charcot, a passenger cruise ship icebreaker, which supports the International Arctic Buoy Program on its multiple trips to the North Pole, will be transiting through Fram Strait into the Arctic Ocean from the East. Once the Charcot is cruising, you can follow it's position here.
